U.S. troops and air assets unleashed heavy suppressive fire; Iranian convoys were reportedly struck to prevent reinforcement. Rescue helicopters took fire (some damaged), but the team extracted the colonel under intense combat conditions.
No U.S. fatalities occurred—remarkable given the risks. The WSO sustained injuries but is expected to recover fully. President Trump announced the success early Sunday on Truth Social with the headline “WE GOT HIM!” He called it “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History,” praising the military’s air dominance and the fact that both crew members were rescued separately without loss of American life. He noted the operation succeeded alongside the earlier pilot recovery, which had been kept quiet to protect the second mission.
Details remain classified for operational security; the colonel’s name has not been released. Verified footage of U.S. helicopters and aircraft over southern Iran circulated, along with unconfirmed clips of the firefight. The mission highlighted U.S. commitment to “no one left behind,” involving multi-service coordination, real-time intel, and decisive force against IRGC pursuers.
